Chapter Six

Ava watched as a rather pretty nurse, wearing rubber gloves and a mask, plucked a shard of teapot from Ava’s foot.

“I can close it with sutures, glue, or staples,” the nurse said.

“Which is best?” Ava asked.

“If it were me,” the nurse said. “I would use sutures. I don’t much trust glue in a place that’s going to get a lot of pressure.”

“Sutures, it is,” Ava said.

“Mind telling me how you did this?”

“Well,” Ava lied. “I was messing around in the kitchen, in the dark, and I managed to knock the teapot off the counter. Naturally, it shattered, and I was faced with trying to escape without a cut. Obviously, I didn’t make it.”

“Thought as much,” the Nurse said as she swabbed the wound with disinfectant. “You would not believe how many people we see who manage to turn a mishap into some sort of medical issue. Have you had a tetanus booster?”

“I don’t recall,” Ava said. “Probably. I keep up on that sort of thing.”

“Good. But if you find you haven’t, let us know. You don’t want tetanus.”

“My grandfather used to call it Lockjaw. No, I don’t want it, sounds dreadful.”

“And lethal. You know, you’re lucky in a way.”

“Lucky to have a cut in my foot?”

“Lucky that we could treat you so quickly. We’re expecting an influx of very sick Covid patients. If that happens, we’ll all be in gowns and masks, and treating the dying.”

“Sounds awful. Is it really that bad?”

“It’s happening in up north, in the bigger cities. Just a matter of time before people start dying. Don’t go anywhere.”

“Where would I go?”

“Who knows? Sometimes, people disappear on us.”

“Not me. I need my foot.”

The nurse chuckled and left. Ava wondered just how lucky she was. She lived in a house where the wiring needed repair, where voices bled in from the cable connection, and where she still needed to sweep up the shards from a teapot and cup that shouldn’t have fallen and shattered. That didn’t sound lucky at all. In fact, as she considered it, it sounded outright eerie. Those sorts of things didn’t happen in normal houses. A tiny bit of trepidation took hold of her brain. What was wrong with her house?

By the time Ava returned to the house, her foot ached, despite the pain pill the nurse had given her. Only one, since Ava was driving. The numbing shot the nurse had used was wearing off, and despite a plethora of padding and a bandage, Ava found it painful to put any sort of weight on the wound. Yet, she knew she couldn’t leave the kitchen a mess. So, as soon as she arrived, she grabbed the broom and swept up the remains of the teapot and cup. She managed but just barely. By the time she finished, her foot throbbed. It was all she could do to pour herself a glass of wine and limp to her bedroom. There, she propped up her foot and took a photo, which she thought would come in handy when she had to call in sick the next day.
